Catholic physicist. Born on February 18, 1745 at Como, Italy; died on March 5, 1827 at Como, Italy. Student of atmospheric electricity. Professor of physics. Invented the electrophorus and the first voltaic battery. The battery is named in his honor, as is the unit of electromotive force, the volt.
