Fort Augustus, Scotland, founded, 1876, by Dom Jerome Vaughan of the Anglo-Benedictine Congregation, upon the site of a fort built, 1729. Made an independent abbey, 1882, under the immediate jurisdiction of the Holy See, the primate exercises the powers peculiar to the head of a congregation.
