or 1. Eldest son of Samuel: he and his brother Abiah acted as judges; their corrupt practices were the plea upon which Israel demanded a king. 1 Samuel 8:2; 1 Chronicles 6:33; 1 Chronicles 15:17 . Apparently Joel is called VASHNIin 1 Chronicles 6:28; but it is possible that the word Joel has dropped out: the passage would then read "the firstborn Joel, and 'the second' Abiah," as in the R.V.
