A tree usually found where water is plentiful, particularly along the Jordan River. Often the willow and the poplar are found together. The willow can grow up to forty feet high. Willow branches were used to make the booths for the feast of tabernacles (Leviticus 23:40 ). In Babylonian captivity the Jews hung their harps on willow trees because they did not feel like singing about Jerusalem in a foreign land (Psalm 137:1-4 ). NIV often translated willow as “poplar.” See Plants in the Bible .
