(vehss pay' ssi an) Emperor of Rome A.D. 69-79. He was born into a wealthy family and became a military hero as commander of a legion under Emperor Claudius. After becoming commander of three legions, he was ordered to quell the Jewish revolt in Palestine in A.D. 66. Three years into the war, he answered the call of the army to become emperor. Vespasian left his command to his son, Titus, and went to Rome. He sought to establish a dynasty, but it lasted only through his two sons, Titus and Domitian. See Caesar; Rome; Titus Caesar.
