(tuhr tuhl' luhss) Diminutive of the personal name Tertius meaning, “third” ( Acts 24:1-8 ). Tertullus was the prosecutor opposing Paul before Felix, the Roman governor of Judea. Tertullus accused Paul of being a political agitator and of attempting to defile the Temple. According to the longer Western text (Acts 24:7 ), Tertullus was a Jew. The shorter text allows for his being a Roman. Whatever his ethnic origin, he was skilled in judicial oratory and was familiar with Roman legal conventions.
