(ssihss' uhr uh) Foreign name of uncertain meaning and derivation, perhaps from the Sea Peoples or Philistines. A Canaanite commander whose chariot-equipped army fought with the infantry of Barak and Deborah (Judges 4:1 ). The battle occurred near Megiddo and the Kishon River. Apparently, a torrential rain (Judges 5:4 , Judges 5:20-21 caused the river to overflow, and the chariots of Sisera bogged down. He fled to the tent of Jael, a Kenite woman who he thought would grant him asylum ( Judges 4:17-18 ). As Sisera slept in Jael's tent, she killed him by driving a tent peg through his temple. The Song of Deborah praises Jael as a heroine (Judges 5:24 ).
