Tax levied on a person, usually as a prerequisite for voting. NAS used poll-tax sometimes when other translations read either taxes or tribute (Matthew 17:25; Matthew 22:17; Mark 12:14 ). Poll-tax is perhaps misleading. The Roman Empire was not a democracy in which the Jewish people participated by voting. “Head-tax” is the meaning the NAS translators had hoped to convey. See Poll .
