(jahz' uh bad) Short form of personal name Jehozabad meaning, “Yah gave.” 1. Person involved in assassination of King Joash about 782 B.C. (2 Kings 12:21 , where Hebrew text says Jozabad, son of Shimeath and Jehozabad, son of Amaziah, but many Hebrew manuscripts read the first name of Jozachar). 2 Chronicles 24:26 reads “Zabad son of Shimeath” and Jehozabad son of Shimrith.” Copying changes have made it impossible to determine precisely the original names. Chronicles shows that because Joash killed the sons of Jehoiada the priest, his own servants paid him back. They even refused to give him royal burial in the kings' tombs. See Jehozabad; Joash .

2. Man from Gederah in tribe of Benjamin who joined David as he fled from King Saul (1 Chronicles 12:4 ). 3 . Two men of tribe of Manasseh who joined David at Ziklag as he fled from Saul (1 Chronicles 12:20 ). 4 . Priest who promised Ezra he would divorce his foreign wife to prevent temptation of foreign worship from invading Israel (Ezra 10:22 ). 5 . Priest who witnessed transfer of gold Ezra's party brought from Babylon to the Temple in Jerusalem (Ezra 8:33 ), though a Hebrew manuscript reads Jonadab here. 6. Levite with foreign wife Ezra condemned (Ezra 10:23 ). 7 . Levite who helped the people understand God's law as Ezra read it (Nehemiah 8:7 ). 8 . Levite in charge of external affairs of the Temple (Nehemiah 11:16 ). 9 . A supervisor of Temple treasures under Hezekiah about 715 B.C. (2 Chronicles 31:13 ). He helped give Levites animals to sacrifice at Passover (2 Chronicles 35:9 ).
