(jih duh' thuhn) Personal name meaning, “praise.” Prophetic musician and Levite in the service of King David (1 Chronicles 25:1 ). The names Asaph and Heman appear along with that of Jeduthun as original ancestors of Temple musicians. In 1 Chronicles 15:17 , however, Asaph and Heman are associated with Ethan, suggesting that Ethan and Jeduthun may be different names for the same person. If that is the case, Jeduthun would have been the son of Kushaiah and a member of the clan of Merari. Otherwise, nothing is known about Jeduthun's ancestry. In 1Chronicles 25:1,1 Chronicles 25:3 he is said to have prophesied using musical instruments; and in 2 Chronicles 35:15 he is referred to as the king's seer, apparently working with Zadok at Gibeon ( 1 Chronicles 16:37-42 ). Three of the Psalms (39; 62; 77) include his name in their titles. The exact nature of Jeduthun's relationship to these Psalms is uncertain. See Priests and Levites; Music; Psalms.
