A skin disorder characterized by an irritating sensation in the upper surface of the skin. The itch included among the curses on those unfaithful to the covenant (Deuteronomy 28:27 ) was possibly eczema or prurigo. NIV, NRSV use itch to distinguish a minor skin disorder from leprosy (Leviticus 13:30-37 ). The KJV termed this disorder “scall,” a malady characterized by dry scales or scabs. Other translations rendered this disorder “infection” (NAS), “scale” (REB), or “sore” (TEV). It has been suggested that alopecia areata , which produces patches of baldness (compare Leviticus 13:40-41 ), or ringworms are the cause of this disorder. Animals suffering from a skin disorder were unsuitable for sacrifice (Leviticus 22:22 ). English translators divide over the nature of this disorder: eczema (NAS), itch (NRSV), scab (REB), scurvy (KJV), skin eruption (TEV). See Diseases, Treatment of.
