A Mesopotamian goddess of fertility and war. In her role as goddess of fertility, Ishtar was associated with Tammuz, the god of vegetation. Ishtar was sometimes identified with the planet Venus and was designated “Mistress of Heaven” in the Amarna tablets. The goddess is perhaps the “Queen of heaven” of Jeremiah 7:18; Jeremiah 44:17-19 ,Jeremiah 44:17-19,44:25; Ezekiel 8:14 . See Fertility Cults; Astarte; Tammuz; Babylon .
