(In di aw) Place name given to a Persian satrapy or province. India was the easternmost limit of the Persian Empire. The name India applies to the territory near the northwestern part of the Indus River, a territory Darius of Persia (522-486 B.C.) had conquered. In the Bible, only Esther mentions it to describe the size of the Persian Empire (1 Kings 1:1; 1 Kings 8:9 ). Trade between India and the biblical lands began before 2000 B.C., however.
