(hawr) Place name, perhaps an ancient variant of Hebrew common noun, har , “mountain.” 1. Place where Aaron, the high priest, died, fulfilling God's word that he would be punished for rebelling at the water of Meribah (Numbers 20:22-29; Numbers 33:38-39 ). Moses installed Aaron's son Eleazar as high priest on the mountain. It was apparently a brief journey from Kadesh and lay near the coast of Edom (Numbers 20:22-23 ). The traditional location at Jebel Harun above Petra is too far inside Edom and too far from Kadesh, though high (4800 feet) and impressive. Recently Bible students have pointed to Jebel Madurah, northeast of Kadesh on Edom's border. Deuteronomy 10:6 places Aaron's death at Mosera, an unknown site which may be under Mount Hor. Israel journeyed from Mount Hor to go around Edom ( Numbers 21:4; Numbers 33:41 ).

2. Mountain marking northern boundary of Promised Land (Numbers 34:7-8 ). The location is unknown, though some would see Hor as a variant name for Mount Hermon.
