A shrubby, evergreen plant of the heather family, used by the KJV (Jeremiah 17:6; Jeremiah 48:6 ). Various translations have been offered: juniper (NAS); bush (NIV); shrub (NRSV, Jeremiah 17:6 ). At Jeremiah 40:8 , the RSV and TEV follow Aquila's Greek translation in substituting wild ass for the plant name. The REB takes the Hebrew figuratively for one destitute. Arabic evidence points to the juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus and Juniperus phoenicea ). See Plants in the Bible .
