KJV term for an unclean bird of prey (Deuteronomy 14:13 ). The identity of the bird (Hebrew raah ) is impossible to determine. The following suggestions have been offered: buzzard (NRSV); kite (REB); red kite (NIV, NAS). The Hebrew root suggests a bird with keen eyesight, for example a member of the hawk family. An easily-confused Hebrew word (daah) occurs in Leviticus 11:14 and in some manuscripts and early translations of Deuteronomy 14:13 . The bird in question may be the red kite (Milvus milvus). See Birds .
