Protective device worn from the neck to the girdle. Also called a brigandine (Jeremiah 46:4; Jeremiah 51:3 KJV) or habergeon ( 2 Chronicles 26:14 KJV). Usually made of leather, though it may at times have been covered with metal scales of some kind. Part of the usual equipment of the solider ( 1 Samuel 17:5; 2 Chronicles 26:14; Nehemiah 4:16; Jeremiah 46:4; Jeremiah 51:3 ). David refused to wear Saul's coat of mail (1 Samuel 17:38 ). Leviathan's skin is described as a double coat of mail (Job 41:13 NRSV, NAS following early Greek translation).
