The English term NIV uses to translate several Hebrew expressions for working with wood and stone. The verb pasal means to hew out or dress stone (Exodus 34:1; Deuteronomy 10:1; 1 Kings 5:18; Habakkuk 2:18 ). Garzen is an ax used in the stone quarries or forests ( Deuteronomy 19:5; 1 Kings 6:7 ). Hoqqi is a verbal noun meaning cutting out or engraving ( Isaiah 22:16; Isaiah 30:8 ). Isaiah employs a word used nowhere else and meaning a carpenter's tool for forming an idol. KJV, NAS, NRSV read “planes.” Ma' atsad is apparently a small, curved cutting tool, perhaps an adze ( Isaiah 44:12; Jeremiah 10:3 ). KJV reads “tongs” in Isaiah 44:12 .
