In Exodus 3:2 , Moses' attention was arrested by the sight of a bush that burned without being consumed by the fire. When he turned aside to investigate, the Lord spoke to him from the bush, instructing him to return to Egypt to deliver the Hebrew people from slavery. Some attempts have been made to explain the phenomenon by claiming that the bush had foliage of a brilliant fiery color, or that its leaves reflected the sunlight in an unusual manner. It is best, however, to regard the burning of the bush as a unique act of God. It appears to have had significance primarily, perhaps solely, as a means of attracting Moses' interest and so enabling him to hear the divine word. See Moses; Exodus .
