(bay' uh nuh) or BAANAH Personal name of uncertain meaning. Some have suggested, “son of grief” or “son of Anat.” English spelling variations reflect similar Hebrew spelling variations. 1. One of Solomon's district supervisors to provide food one month a year for the court. His territory encompassed the great central plain with the famous cities of Beth-shean, Taanach, and Megiddo (1 Kings 4:12 ). 2 . Another district supervisor over Asher, the western slopes of Galilee in the north. His father Hushai may have been “David's friend” (2 Samuel 15:37 ). 3 . Father of Zadok, who repaired walls of Jerusalem under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 3:4 ). 4 . A captain of Ishbosheth's army after Saul died and Abner deserted to David and was killed by Joab. Baanah and his brother killed Ishbosheth and reported it to David, who had them killed (2 Samuel 4:1 ). 5 . Father of Heleb, one of David's thirty heroes (2 Samuel 23:29 ). 6 . Man who returned with Zerubbabel from Babylonian captivity about 537 B.C. (Ezra 2:2 ). 7 . One who signed Nehemiah's covenant to obey God's law (Nehemiah 10:27 ).
