(ahr' pawd) or ARPHAD A city-state in northern Syria closely identified with Hamath. The Rab-shakeh, representing Sennacherib, Assyria's king, taunted the people of Judah in 701 B.C. (2 Kings 10:34; 2 Kings 19:13 ). He reminded the people walled up in Jerusalem that the gods of Arpad did not save it from Sennacherib. Isaiah mimicked such statements, saying Assyria was only a rod of Yahweh's anger and would soon face punishment for its pride (Isaiah 10:5-19 ). Jeremiah noted Arpad's confusion as he pronounced doom on Damascus (Jeremiah 49:23 ). Arpad is modern tell Erfad about 25 miles north of Aleppo. Assyrian kings Adadnirari (806 B.C.), Ashurninari (754 B.C.), Tiglath-pileser (740 B.C.), and Sargon (720 B.C.) all mention victories over Arpad.
