RSV translation of nokriya , which is also translated as strange woman (KJV), adulterous woman (Proverbs 23:27 ) (NAS), wayward wife (NIV), adulteress (NRSV), and immoral women (TEV) in Proverbs 2:16; Proverbs 5:20; Proverbs 6:24; Proverbs 7:5; Proverbs 23:27 ). Some see an adventuress as a woman who lives in part by her wits, but largely based upon sex. Others describe her as a woman who seeks social advancement or wealth by seduction or other immoral means. Solomon's wives were called nokriyoth —that is, foreign wives (1Kings 11:1,1 Kings 11:8 ), so the term may refer to women cut off or ostracized from Israelite society and normal social relationships. They are feared as ones who break up marriages.
