People in ancient times did not have the same knowledge of astronomy as people of today have. Nevertheless, they knew that the stars were beyond number and that they were an indication of the greatness of God who created them (Genesis 1:16; Genesis 15:5; Job 9:7-10; Psalms 8:3; Psalms 136:7-9; Amos 5:8). The Bible condemns the worship of stars and all forms of astrology (Deuteronomy 4:19; 2 Kings 21:3; 2 Kings 23:5; Isaiah 47:13; Acts 7:43).
The writers of the Bible repeatedly picture God’s great interventions in judgment as being accompanied by spectacular irregularities among the sun, moon and stars (Isaiah 13:9-11; Ezekiel 32:7; Joel 2:31; Joel 3:15; Matthew 24:29-31; Revelation 6:12-14).
