Moab estava localizada ao leste do Mar Morto. Os moabitas eram descendentes do Lot surtos de sua relação incestuosa com sua filha maior ( Gênesis 19:31-38). Moab sempre foi inimizade do Israel. Oprimiu-a e invadiu sua terra ( Juízes 3:12-14), brigou contra Saul ( 1 Samuel 14:47) e contra Davi ( 2 Samuel 8:2, 2 Samuel 8:11-12). Moab receberia o castigo pelo trato duro que deu ao Israel.
