Jeremiah 16

Everett's Study Notes on the Holy ScripturesEverett's Study Notes

Verses 1-21

Jeremiah 16:5 For thus saith the LORD, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the LORD, even lovingkindness and mercies.

Jeremiah 16:5 Comments Cultural traditions of mourning for the dead can be very strong in societies. A person was looked down upon if he does not participate with such traditions. I am told that some villages in Uganda, East Africa, hold mourning traditions that last for up to a month. Everyone in the village stops working for a month in order to observe such traditions. We can imagine how Jeremiah was despised because he did not contribute nor participate with their traditions.

Jeremiah 16:16 Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.

Jeremiah 16:16 Comments John Hagee interprets Jeremiah 16:16 to refer to the period when Hitler hunted the Jews from all over Europe to kill them. [19]
