Whole Bible (38)Old Testament (1)Individual Books (1)
Verses 1-17
2 Chronicles 3:1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
2 Chronicles 3:1 Word Study on “Moriah” Strong says the Hebrew word “Moriah” ( מוֹרִיָּה ) (H4179) literally means, “seen of Jah,” and comes from two Hebrew words, the primitive root ( רָאָה ) (H7200), which means, “to see,” and from ( יָהּ ) (H3050), which is a contraction of ( יְהוָֹה ) (H3068), meaning “YHWH, or Jehovah.” Thus, it carries the meaning, “the place where YHWH is seen,” or “the place where YHWH sees.”
This word is used only two times in the entire Old Testament. The other use is found in Genesis 22:2, when God instructed Abraham instructed to offer Isaac upon this same mount.
Genesis 22:2, “And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah ; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.”
