Verse 11

Luke 11:11

Matthew 7:9

Bread -- stone -- Bread in ancient times was cooked either in larger outdoor community ovens, or small indoor rock ovens. Inside a fire was built over a small shallow level pit filled with stones that had a stone cover. The dough mixture was placed into the pit and covered with a large hot stone, and baked. When the cake of bread, now resembling a large two inch thick pizza crust, was done, and lifted from the pit there would be some stones stuck on the bottom of the bread that would have to be dislodged before the bread was eaten.

I think of a parallel to this in my own life when I was only five or six years old. When my dad would go fishing and mother fry them he would meticulously pick out the fish bones before giving me a scrambled up pile of fish.

The point is how a father carefully guards and provides safely for the well being of his children.

This process of baking is beautifully portrayed in the filmstrip by Cathedral Films, "Everyday Life in Palestine."

Matthew 7:10

The Jews were only allowed to eat fish with scales. There is a long thin cat fish in Sea of Galilee which was called by Jews a "snake". They would sell it to their Gentile neighbors but would not eat it itself. [See picture of by Mike Tays, 2019-0709]. A Jewish father would not give his son such a cat fish to eat.

Vs. 12

Egg -- Scorpion -- The coolest place in the stucco stone houses of ancient Palestine were the recesses in the stone walls. Here in these crevices the eggs would be scattered. But when an egg was selected to be used it would have to be inspected to see if any scorpion was also clinging to the egg.

The lesson is the same point of verse 11, how a father carefully guards the well being of his children.

Verse 51

Luke 11:51

Parallel Matthew 23:35

Jesus’ Endorsement of the OT Canon

The OT was arranged from Genesis to Chronicles as the last book. Abel (Gen. 3) was the first, and Zacharias ( 2 Chron. 24:20-21) @ 800 BC; note from A to Z, or first to last. Not Chronologically, Urijah, in Jer. 26:20-23 in 609 BC, also slain. So it is a literary arrangment, not chronologically. Also Josephus names the 22 books of their Bible, the same as ours, and here Jesus covers the death of all the prophets from A to Z, or first to last, as listed in the Hebrew OT.

Verse 52

Luke 11:52

experts in the law ... lawyers -- Lawyers and Pharisees said to have large key on their girdle. See note on Matthew 23:13
