Ordinances -- authoritative commands; had to do with religious rituals.

Contrasting the first the the second

Acts 7:46-48; cf. Acts 17:2-25

1) v. 1 The first was an earthly sanctuary - cf Hebrews 9:11, Hebrews 8:2

2) v.2-5 It was a type of something greater - Hebrews 9:23

3) v. 6-7 First tabernacle was inaccessible to the people (only priest could enter, 1 Peter 2:5; Romans 12:1

4) v. 8 The first tabernacle was only temporary -

5) v. 9-10 The temple ministry was external & carnal

1) It is heavenly - Hebrews 9:11

2) Capable of dealing with sins - Hebrews 9:12-15 [see note v.12]

3) Its ministry based on a costly sacrifice - Hebrews 9:16-22

4) New sanctuary ministry rep fulfillment - Hebrews 9:24

5) New sanctuary ministry is final and complete - Hebrews 9:25-28

Not of this building -- several translation read "not of this creation", free from the ravages of time.

Verse 12

Hebrews 9:12

2) New sanctuary’s ministry capable of dealing with sin - Hebrews 9:12-15

a) Animal sacrifice vs. Christ himself (v.12, detailed in ch. 10)

b) OT sacrifices has to be repeated, New was "once", "eternal"

c) Blood of animals dealt ceremonially outward v.13)

But Christ deals with inner cleansing, v.14

d) Old - transgressions covered; under New the are cleansed Romans 3:24-26

3) More costly sacrifice - vs. 16-23

4) Rep. fulfillment - v.24

Once -- The High Priest entered one day a year, the day of atonement, but on that day it seems he entered twice. First to offer the blood of a bull for himself and his family, and second to offer the blood of a goat for the people. Jesus didn’t have to make an offering for himself, for he was holy and sinless Hebrews 7:26.

Lev. 16. The High Priest offered the blood of a bull for himself, and then the blood of one of the two goats for the people (the other goat became the "escape" goat, see Lev. 16).

Purge -- This is "deep" cleansing - inward -, and not only outward.

New Testament -- Matthew 26:28, Christ’s blood ratifies the N.C. and procures the forgiveness of sins.

World -- kosmou κόσμου

End of the world -- end of the "age" αἰών (αἰώνων) , i.e, end of the Jewish age. Cf. 1 Corinthians 10:11.

"appear" -- gives a summary of Christ’s work.

1) v. 26 C. appeared to put away sin

2) v. 24 Now appears in heaven for us. Hebrews 9:24

3) v. 28 One day appear to take us home to heaven Hebrews 9:28

Look -- wait, waiting, "wait eagerly"; "eagerly await"

After the High Priest entered the Most Holy Place, the people awaited his reappearing, cf. Luke 1:21.

His appearing to them meant "salvation", for the H.P. reappearance meant the sin offering had been made.
