Verses 1-7

    1. An Unintentional Trespass against MAN! (6:1-7)
      1. Sins against man are also against God, for the law of God regulates human conduct in the relationships of man to man(as well as man to God of course).
        1. It is only a “sin” because God named it that.
      2. Wait a minute, didn’t David say, (turn to Ps.51:4)
        1. “Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight;”
        2. And this was in regards to the 2 most heinous crimes you could commit against your fellow (namely Bathsheba & Uriah)
        3. What David does is loses sight of all else save his sin against God!
        4. Plus it rests in God alone to grant forgiveness.
        5. He couldn’t seek forgiveness from Uriah, now that he was dead.
        6. Image issue also à "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man.”
        7. See also Ps.51:14
      3. It is not enough to make amends to the individual who you hurt.
        1. A trespass offering is still required(6)
      4. So here(when it is against man) we note that Step [1] is payment of the restitution(the legal action); Step [2] is the sacrifice(the moral & spiritual action).
        1. Both are important to God both are put together as one…are legal & moral/spiritual obligations!
      5. Thoughts to chew on over pie or Holy Cow tonight: Shutting up a man in prison for his misdeeds is something unknown in the O.T. (not that it doesn’t happen, just that God doesn’t teach to do that!)
        1. God outlined: hard work to pay back the one you wronged + 20% in payment back. And, the death penalty in some situations.
        2. Maybe our “correctional facilities” are not so correct?
        3. Maybe the “work along the freeways picking up trash” is more in the right direction? (I like the hand pulling of an acre of weeds, personally!)
    2. Christ is our Trespass Offering!
      1. Col.2:13 “And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He(Christ) has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,”
      2. Christ’s payment not only took away sin, but also covered the damage of sin!
        1. Mt.6:12 “And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.”

Verses 8-30

  1. BURNT OFFERINGS! (8-13)
    1. Let’s follow the priests example:
      1. [1] Wake up & “put on” your spiritual clothes each morn(full armor).
      2. [2] Get up each morn & get rid of the “ashes of old”(yesterdays ashes)
      3. [3] Stoke the fire!
        1. 2 Tim.1:6 “I remind you to stir up(fan into flame) the gift of God which is in you” {i.e. “stir up the flame again in your life!”}
      4. [4] Offer a new burnt offering unto the Lord.
        1. The daily service was 2 lambs, 1 offered at sunrise & the other at evening.
      5. [5] Keep our hearts flame burning perpetually.
        1. Wood was provided for the fire at the expense of the congregation.
          1. Body Life! (team work – unity)
        2. Fire always burning (3 x’s). This fire originated from God (see 9:24), thus it shall always be maintained carefully by the priests.
        3. Is the flame burning high on the altar of your heart?
        4. Lk.24:32 "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?"
        5. Song of Sol. 8:6 “Set me as a seal upon your heart, As a seal upon your arm; For love is as strong as death, Jealousy as cruel as the grave; Its flames are flames of fire, A most vehement flame.”
          1. Feed yourself with the word of God, which is fuel to the flame.
          2. Ask that it may burn hotly!
        6. Q: Is your heart lukewarm? – Rev.3:15,16
        7. Q: Has your heart grown cold? - “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”
  2. GRAIN OFFERINGS! (14-23)
    1. (17) Let’s also keep out the leaven out of our lives. This includes:
      1. Hypocrisy "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” Lk.12:1
      2. False doctrine “You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump.” Gal.5:7-9
      3. Corrupt living “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named… Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?” 1 Cor.5:1,6
    2. (18) Remember, only the holy souls may partake of the heavenly bread!
      1. Holy has the same root as wholly, it means complete. A man is not complete in spiritual stature if all his mind, heart, soul, and strength are not given to God.” (R. J. Stewart)
      2. “A holy life is not an ascetic, or gloomy, or solitary life, but a life regulated by divine truth and faithful in Christian duty. It is living above the world while we are still in it.” (Tryon Edwards (1809-1894))
  3. SIN OFFERINGS! (24-30)
    1. This offering was so holy it could not remain in the defiled camp (4:11,12)
    2. (25) With both the sin & trespass offerings you’ll notice the repetition of “it is most holy”.
      1. Thus probably emphasizing the holiness of the lord.
      2. Pilate, Herod, & Judas all agreed in asserting that in Him there was no fault.
