Verses 1-11

  1. TRAPPING THE TRAPPERS! (7:53-8:9a)
    1. Problems with this? - Both of them deserved to die (Lev.20:10)
      1. The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death.
      2. Judaism's 3 gravest crimes: idolatry, murder, & adultery...Were all punishable by death.
      3. The Mishnah, the Jewish codified law, states that the penalty for adultery is strangulation, & even the method of strangulation is laid down. “The man is to be enclosed in dung up to his knees, & a soft towel set w/in a rough towel is to be placed around his neck (in order that no mark may be made, for the punishment is God’s punishment). Then one man draws in one direction & another in the other direction, until he be dead.” The Mishnah reiterates that death by stoning is the penalty for a girl who is betrothed & who then commits adultery. (William Barclay; The Gospel of John; Vol.2 pg.2)
      4. So, where is dung boy if they were caught in the very act?
    2. (5) The horns of a dilemma: If He says, “no don’t stone her”, as the law required, He could be charged with being a lawbreaker. If He says, “yes stone her”, the wrath of the Roman Government would come upon Him.
      1. Do you kill the woman or kill the Law?
    3. (6) The self-proclaimed guardians of righteousness must have set up this sinful rendezvous to spring the trap.
      1. How did they catch her any ways? Voyeurism (peeping tom’s/peeping Pharisees)? They never lusted after her? How long did they watch? Going in & grabbing her naked, not 1 sinful thought?
      2. They’re using her, just like all the rest of the men! - To them she had no name, no personality, no heart, no feelings, no soul. She was simply an expendable pawn in their strategy to corner Jesus into checkmate. (Chuck Swindoll; John 8; pg.26.)
      3. Jesus silence must have been deafening; the drama, intense!
    4. There’s always so much more to these stories! - Was she victimized as a little girl over & over growing up? Was she a woman abused by her husband? Was she searching for love in all the wrong places? Was she sexually broken? Was she a prostitute who would sell love for a price, but had none to give? Would she forever confuse love with sex?...These can be so very painful.
    5. Jesus stooped down & wrote on the ground w/His finger
      1. How healthy to stop & collect thoughts before you speak.
      2. Only thing Jesus ever wrote!
    6. (7) He who is w/o sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first –
      1. Deut.17:7 says, The hands of the witnesses shall be the first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So you shall put away the evil from among you.
        1. So Jesus merely forces these legalists to go strictly by the law.
        2. He makes only 1 qualification...that they take a look at the log in their own eyes before they try to take the speck out of somebody else’s. (Mt.7:1-5)
    7. (8) Did He write on the ground to remind them of Ex.31:18? And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
      1. Or to remind them of Jer.17:13? “Those who depart from Me Shall be written in the earth, Because they have forsaken the Lord, The fountain of living waters.”
    8. (9a) One by one the rocks thud to the ground. The vigilantes retreat home, heads hung in shame, or at least in defeat.
    9. Even when others try to force Jesus into meanness, He would not allow it!
      1. If there was ever a perfect opportunity to bring down the wrath of God on a sinful woman, it was right then.
      2. Of course she should be stoned. And you should be stoned. And I should be stoned next!
        1. But then she hears a voice of hope, which should be one of the markers of a NT community! McManus; Unstoppable Force; pg.162
    10. If those who are the religious elite are closest to God, why is it that they are so rarely closest to love?
      1. If God is love, those who know God best would love people most! (McManus; Entry #13 Soul Cravings)
    11. What if it was a different sin? What if she was a lesbian or a woman who had an abortion, or a drunk driver, or a prostitute? That might put the pharisaical shoe on the other foot.
      1. Would you be a little more reluctant to drop your stones? A little more ready to condemn? A lot less glad to hear Jesus say, “Neither do I condemn you.”
    12. I say we stop calling this, “The woman caught in Adultery” but instead, “The men caught in self-righteous hypocrisy!”
      1. These men are fortunate it isn't called, “The Revenge of Jesus!”
      2. Jesus had already said in 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
  2. FREEING THE TRAPPED! (8:9B-11)
    1. (9b) What a contrast she & Jesus make: the guilty & the guiltless; adulteress & advocate; sinner & Savior.
    2. First, let’s make clear...Adultery is a very grievous sin!
      1. It has destroyed homes; it is in God’s top 10 commandments; it was in fact so serious it was a capitol offense.
      2. This does not a wink at sin - He addresses it. She is not a victim but a willing participant. There was a pattern of sin, “Go & sin no more” (or, “Go now & leave your life of sin”)
    3. (10) Her heart must have been pounding; deep breathes; flush.
    4. He said to her, Woman - not whore, not home-wrecker. But with respect & love, He uses the same word He’ll later use for His own mother.
      1. Surely a sermon must be gathering momentum. But no sermon comes!
    5. Has no one condemned you? No one, Lord - Yet, Jesus was the One who could have picked up a stone!
    6. (11) When everyone had left, Jesus addressed the woman’s 2 greatest needs: Forgiveness & a challenge to Holiness.
    7. Jesus, full of grace & truth...forgives the sinner w/o condoning the sin.
      1. Neither do I condemn you - wait, wait, wait! How does Jesus get out of not stoning her, as the Law clearly said??? - Isn’t the wages of sin death!
        1. Paul explains how in 2 Cor.5:21…For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
        2. Or, God would treat Christ like He lived her life; & would treat her like she lived His life! (known as Christ’s substitution death!)
        3. Jesus doesn’t blow off her sin...He goes to the cross for it!
      2. Go & sin no more - or, “Go now & leave your life of sin”.
        1. You are a woman. Go leave your life of sin. Live like a woman. Live like a dignified, forgiven, cleansed woman. Go live that life.
    8. So I guess we can say...What these guys meant for Evil Christ meant for Good; & What these guys meant for Death Christ meant for Life; &What these guys meant for Wrath Christ meant for Mercy/Grace!
      1. And we received the same!
    9. You have been caught in__________.
      1. Can you read the writing in the sand?
    10. Are your eyes free from logs so that you can see to take the specks out of the eyes of others? - Are you spiritual enough to restore the one caught in a trespass? (Gal.6:1)
    11. If this story reveals 1 thing it’s the truth that, “the safest place for a sinful person to go, is to God.”
      1. He will neither condemn us nor leave us in our brokenness.
      2. She realized: God wanted her. God was her place to belong. Love gives us a fresh start. Love gives us a reason to live.
    12. Thank you Lord for catching us in our sin. We deserve the full weight of the Law; yet we are blessed with the full strength of Grace.
      1. Jesus has taken the rock in his own hand, & cast it upon Himself!
    13. End: Reading this Prayer! (by Ken Gire; Intimate Moments with the Savior; pg.59)
    14. I confess w/shame that here are times I have stood in the midst, condemned. And there are times I have stood in the crowd, condemning.

There are times my heart has been filled w/adultery. And there are times my hands have been filled w/stones.

Forgive me for a heart that is so prone to wander, so quick to forget my vows to you. Forgive me, too, for my eagerness in bringing You the sins of others.

And my reluctance in bringing You my own.

Forgive me for the times I have stood smugly Pharisaic & measured out judgment to others. Others I am not qualified to judge. Others, who You, though qualified, refuse to.

Help me to be more like You Jesus - full of grace & truth.

Help me to live not by law but by grace, by the spirit of compassion you showed to that woman so many mornings ago.

Give me, I pray, the pierced conscience of the older ones in regard to the stumblings of others so my hands may be first to drop their stones, & my feet, first to leave the circle of the self-righteous.

Thank you for those sweet words of forgiveness “Neither do I condemn you.” Words that flow so freely from your lips. Words that I have heard so often when I have stumbled. And in the strength of those unmerited words, help me to go my way & sin no more...

Verses 12-36

  1. INTRO:
    1. Aeroflat Flight 593 (Russian Airlines) The voice and flight data recorders revealed a message of terror. “Daddy, can I turn this?” The cockpit tapes record a chilling scene:

The relief pilot, Yaroslav Kudrinsky, was taking his 2 children on their 1st international flight and they were brought to the cockpit while he was on duty. They were getting a flying lesson just before the Aeroflot jet crashed in Siberia, killing all 75 people aboard. The transcript of the desperate final minutes before the March 1994 crash reveal the captain shouting, “Get out! Get out!” More than a dozen times the pilot yelled at his son, who was in the captain’s seat when the plane began to plunge. The deciding act occurred when the boy’s foot “accidentally pushed the right pedal, sending the aircraft into an irreversible spin.”With the autopilot active, Kudrinsky, against regulations, offered to let them sit at the controls. First his daughter Yana took the pilot's left front seat. Kudrinsky adjusted the autopilot's heading to give her the impression that she was turning the plane, though she actually had no control of the plane. Next, his son Eldar Kudrinsky(15) took the pilot's seat.Unlike his sister, Eldar applied enough force to the control column to contradict the autopilot for 30 seconds. He unknowingly disabled the A310's autopilot’s control of the ailerons(Ay-le-rons), which put the aircraft into a steep bank, and then an uncontrolled dive. The pilots were not aware of the complete disconnection of the autopilot, which occurred with no audible alarm, and did not regain control of the aircraft.
      1. It’s so clear, they had no right being in the pilot’s seat!!!
      2. It’s the same with our lives...why do we keep competing for the drivers seat?
    2. I’ve never understood the bumper sticker that reads, “God is my co-pilot”. I have one thing to say, Your in the Wrong Seat!”
    3. Do you know where you are going in life? Or, What God’s direction is for your life?
      1. The religious leaders in Jesus’ day didn’t know where they were going, nor where Jesus’ was going...we call it being in the dark!
      2. They had: the light of the Law(5) & the light of conscience(9) but they did not have the light of life!(12)
    4. Outline: Jesus Gives The Light of LIFE & The Light of LEADING & The Light of LIBERATION!
    5. Background: the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles. Timing: day after, final day of the feast.
Setting: the Temple Treasury (located near the Court of the Women, so named because thewoman could enter this part of the Temple).
Backdrop: On the 1st evening of the feast there was a ceremony called The Illumination of the Temple. It took place in the Court of the Women...When the dark came...four great candelabra were lit and, it was said, they sent such a blaze of light throughout Jerusalem that every courtyard was lit up with their brilliance. William Barclay; Gospel of John; Vol.2, pg.11.
      1. This magnificent light was a reminder of God’s pillar of fire that guided & protected Israel through the wilderness.
      2. It is with this strong visual backdrop Jesus makes this next claim, vs.12.
      3. Jesus desires to guide His followers: His words being a lamp to our feet & light to our path. His life being a lamp to our feet & light to our path.
  2. LIGHT OF THE WORLD!
    1. THE LIGHT OF LIFE! (12-20)
    2. (12) I am the Light of the world - The 2nd of the I Am statements.
    3. So the verbal sword fight between Jesus & the Pharisees begins.
      1. Jesus starts the fencing match with vs.12.
      2. Note: Jesus claims to be the light of the world not a light!
      3. Though the claim is exclusive, the offer is inclusive - an offer any and all could respond to.
    4. As the Light of the world, Christ claimed to be God, for God is Light.
      1. God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 1Jn.1:5
      2. Darkness speaks of death, ignorance, & sin; Light speaks of life, knowledge, & holiness. (Warren Wiersbe; Outlines of NT; Jn.8.)
    5. Wait, how does “light” lead to “life”?
      1. Because once you have the light, there is no more groping in darkness, but now you can see the right way to go!
        1. Example: Water caves in Belize. Only some had flashlights & could see the way.
    6. (13) The Pharisees thrust back with a sharp retort. The fencing match is under way.
    7. Jesus says his claims are validated by 2 witnesses: The testimony of the Son on Earth (18a); The testimony of the Father in Heaven (18b).
    8. (20) Spoken from the Temple Treasury. (from vs.2-20)
    9. Jesus the light of life...Some people change their ways when they see the light,
Others only when they feel the heat. :) Your choice!
    10. THE LIGHT OF LEADING! (21-30)
    11. There are 2 births: from above (being born again by God’s Spirit); & from this world (being born of the flesh).
    12. There are 2 ways to die: the sinner dies in his sins; but the believer dies in the Lord (Rev.14:13 Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on)
    13. (23,24) Some people are offended at a physicians bluntness, but here Dr. Jesus gets right down to the diagnosis:“Terminal Cancer. Without radical surgery, you’re going to die.”
    14. (26-29) Jesus told the Jews that He came from heaven. The Father sent Him(26); The Father taught Him(28); The Father remained with Him(29).
      1. The only time the Father was not “with Him” was when Christ was made sin for us on the cross.
    15. (28) Lift up - which means of course the crucifixion. He already used this in 3:14-16 & will again in 12:32-34.
    16. THE LIGHT OF LIBERATION! (31-36)
    17. (31) Abide - Jesus was saying, “your future loyalty to my teaching will prove the reality of your present profession.”
      1. We accept folks into the body of Christ on profession of trust in Christ; Continuance in the word/teachings proves the sincerity or insincerity of the profession. It is the acid test of life. (A.T.Robertson; Word Pictures in the NT; Vol.5, pg.149.)
    18. (32) Truth - His teachings should be accepted as absolute truth!
      1. Many philosophies & ideologies claim to be based on truth, but the truth Jesus is speaking of here is not assent to a proposition, but trust in Jesus Himself who said, “I am the way, the truth, & the life.”
      2. The Word of God does not claim to just contain truth, but is truth; It is not simply true, but is truth itself!
        1. Why is this important? because there is no higher standard of truth to compare it by. The bible itself is the final standard of truth.
        2. Jesus doesn’t say, thy word is true, in Jn.17:17, but Your word is truth.
    19. Note: the condition on this freedom/liberation - “if” you abide in My word, you’ll experience this liberation. [You must “hold to” His teachings]
      1. Not just know the truth but living the truth!
    20. (33) What did the Pharisees lack, which prevented them from recognizing the truth of Jesus’ words? They lacked…
      1. (19) Knowing who Jesus was, thus lacked the knowledge of the Father.
      2. (23) The right birth (they were from beneath; of this world. i.e. Worldly/fleshly only)
      3. (24) Believing in Jesus.
      4. (33) Knowing they were in bondage.
    21. The Jews felt they were free men because Abraham was their father.
      1. Yet all unsaved men are not free but are enslaved by sin.
    22. At that time they were in bondage to Rome; to the Law; & of course to the world the flesh & the devil.
    23. Christ is speaking about spiritual not physical or political, bondage & liberty.
      1. The lost sinner is in bondage to lusts & sins. Read Titus 3:3-7.
      2. The lost sinner is in bondage to the world system & the devil.
        1. Eph.2:1,2 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air.
      3. By receiving the truth in Christ, spiritual slaves are set free!
    24. (33) The attitude of the Pharisees escalates from contradiction(13) to insinuation(19) to denial(33) to insult(latter in 48) to sarcasm(53) and, finally & climatically, to violence(59).
    25. (35) The slave vs. son analogy, Jesus is probably referring to Isaac(son) & Ishmael(slave)
      1. Since they quoted Abraham, Jesus talks about his 2 boys.
        1. Like Paul did in Gal.4:21-31
    26. The Son makes you free (36) so trust Him & follow Him. The Truth makes you free (32) so study it, believe it, obey it.
    27. If the Son makes you free - Do not substitute Savior for Son in this passage.
      1. The Savior has set us free from sin; but this is the freedom that comes from being set free from myself by the Son.
      2. It is what Paul meant in when he said, "I have been crucified with Christ . . . ."
      3. Paul’s individuality had been broken & his spirit had been united with his Lord; not just merged into Him, but made one with Him.
    28. You shall be free indeed - free to the very core of your being; free from the inside to the outside.
    29. This morning, do you find yourself in the pilot’s seat or in the co-pilots seat?

Verses 37-59

  1. INTRO:
    1. John Uriarte (Operation Military Assist); Frank Chaput (Mstr Gunnery Srgt USMC Retired)
    2. Memorial Day = a day to honor those who have fought and died for our freedom.
    3. For many Americans, Memorial Day means the 1st 3-day weekend of summer filled with bbq’s/picnics w/family & friends, or going to the hardware store for some project.
    4. For other Americans, the day is sacred. A time to pay tribute to fallen war heroes. They feel the impact of a soldier's name you might casually glance at in your local newspaper. That name is their mom or dad, aunt or uncle, brother or sister, daughter or son.
      1. No matter what your view is on war, it is important to honor U.S. soldiers who have paid the ultimate price!
      2. So before we light our grills & grab our hammers, let's pause to remember those bravehearts who died to protect our freedoms - including our freedom to worship God freely today.
        1. Abraham Lincoln said, Any nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure.
    5. We would like to recognize, honor, & pray for…
      1. Families who have had a family member killed while serving in the US armed forces...please stand & remain standing!
      2. Families who currently have a family member serving in the US armed forces...please stand & remain standing!
      3. Anyone who is presently serving or who has served in the US armed forces...please stand & remain standing! {Let’s pray}
    6. We come w/hearts filled w/gratitude & appreciation for those who have served in the past We pray for protection and peace, courage & strength for those who serve now. We pray for military families: for the sacrifices they make in the time spent away from their soldier; for the families to have a double portion of strength, courage & blessings.
    7. Intro Story - Did you hear last week the news headlines: “Baby Girls Switched at Birth: Truth Comes Out 56 Years Later”?
      1. In 1953 2 baby girls(Kay Rene Reed Qualls & DeeAnn Angell Shafer) were born in Pioneer Hospital in eastern Oregon. They grew up happily, got married, had kids of their own & became grandparents. Then last summer their lives were turned upside down.
      2. They were mistakenly switched at birth, when the nurses bathed the 2 bald, 6 pound babies, somehow mixing them up in the bath water and returned the babies to the wrong mothers.
      3. Everything changed one day when an 86-year old woman residing in a nursing home, phoned Kay Rene’s brother, Bobby Reed asking to see him, because she had something to get off her chest.
        1. Can you imagine living for 56 years only to find out you’re in the wrong family? Happens all the time spiritually! Most people think they are automatically born into God’s family, & only if they are “really bad” then they might be removed. But actually, the opposite is true. No one is born into God’s family automatically, You must be born a 2nd time. Entering His family is a choice.
  2. PATERNITY TEST!
    1. MY DAD CAN BEAT UP YOUR DAD! (37-47)
    2. (37) Remember the Sunday School song, Father Abraham had many Seeds/Sons?

      1. (Message Bible) my message hasn’t yet penetrated your thick skulls.
      2. Does His word have a place in you? Have residence in you?
        1. Big difference between a temp shelter & permanent residence.
    4. (44) If Satan becomes your father, hell will be your home.
      1. The Jewish officials could trace their lineage back to Abraham, but their spiritual lineage goes all the way back to the Devil himself! (Chuck Swindoll; John; pg.36)
        1. The serpent of old had enticed them away from the true God with the seductive apple of religiosity.
        2. But under the Devil’s clerical garb, he is both a murderer & a liar. And, like father, like son. They twisted the truth about Jesus & were plotting to kill Him(40).
    5. WHO DO YOU MAKE YOURSELF OUT TO BE? (48-59)
    6. (51) Never see death - So, what did He mean? (i.e. Never know the experience of that death, which is God’s judgment on sin) - Read 5:24.
    7. (55) Liar - you guys are a chip off the ol’ block! (44)
    8. (56) How did Abraham see Jesus’ day? - Abraham in faith saw ahead to the day of Christ’s incarnation, & anticipated His saving work. (Search The Scriptures; Jn.8:30-59; Bottom Notes.)
    9. (58) Jesus gives one of the most important answers to any question posed to Him in the gospel of John. (from vs.53b Who do You make Yourself out to be?)
      1. The only other time the phrase “I AM” was used to describe someone was in Ex.3:14, where God claimed that name for Himself.
        1. No identity statement could be clearer.
        2. Jesus claimed to be God Himself in human form.
    10. I Am - the divine name as in Ex.3 (read vs.13-15)
      1. Perhaps Moses knew of God as the distant Sovereign, but not as the immanent God who cares for & loves His chosen ones.
      2. This is God’s self-identification, He names Himself! It is the announcement of a present God. [YHWH-Jehovah-Yahweh (Tetragrammaton)]
        1. It was held by the later Jews to be so sacred that it was never pronounced except by the high priest on the great Day of Atonement. Whenever this name occurred they pronounced it, as they still do, “Adonai” (i.e., Lord), thus using another word in its stead.
      3. The title God gives Himself is one of wondrous significancy. (This next section, portions are adapted from C.H. Macintosh Notes on Exodus; pg.52)
      4. It is God’s personality. (ἐγώ εἰμι)
        1. Over the veiled statue of the Egyptian Isis was the famous inscription, “I am the thing that is, & was, & shall be.” But to Israel God was a living personality, distinct from all other beings & things, & transcendent above them -not it, but He! (F.B.Meyer; Exodus; Vol.1; pg.50)
        2. When He says, I AM, it encompasses them all! He is the always-present God.
          1. Jehovah in taking this title, was providing His people w/a blank check, to be filled up to any amount!
      5. When you trace your finger across the pages of the OT, you'll find the names of God are intimately connected with the various needs of those whom He was in relation with.
        1. Jehovah-jireh (the Lord will Provide/given by Abr, ram caught in thicket); Jehovah-nissi (the Lord my banner/given by Moses, after defeat Amalekites, lifted arms); Jehovah-shalom (the Lord send peace/given by Gideon at altar where Angel appeared); Jehovah-shammah (the Lord is there/given by Ezek for Jerusalem). Jehovah-tsidkenu (the Lord our righteousness/given by Jeremiah name for Messiah).
        2. All of these gracious titles were unfolded to meet the needs of His people.
    11. If we want life, Christ says, I AM the life; If we want righteousness, He is, the Lord our Righteousness; If we want peace, He is our Peace; if we want wisdom, sanctification, & redemption, He is made all these unto us.
      1. What a profound & adorable name..I AM!
      2. Every believer can rejoice in these words falling from Jesus lips…
    12. I AM the Bread of Life (to satisfy your deep spiritual needs); I AM the Light of the world (so you don’t have to walk in darkness); I AM the Door (to those seeking entrance); I AM the Good Shepherd (to all sheep who have lost their way); I AM the Res & the Life (to those desiring true life, before & after death); I AM the Way, Truth, Life (to those who desire direction, wisdom, & the abundant life); I AM the True Vine (to those branches that will remain attached) (Then in Rev) I AM the Alpha & Omega (& everything in between); I AM the Bright & Morning Star (to those that need a beginning of a bright new day!)

    14. (59) The Jews did not respond with words but picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy. (That’s how blasphemy was dealt with)
      1. But it was not up to the crowd to determine the timing of Jesus’ death!
    15. So, Have you taken a Paternity Test?
    16. 1 Jn.3:10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.
      1. We normally think of devil children as, “Rosemary’s baby, Damien in The Omen, or Linda Blair in The Exorcist”. But the bible places all unbelievers in that category.
      2. Children of the devil don’t represent grossly immoral people; they represent self-righteous religious people, who are deluded into an outward form of godliness that lacks power of the gospel.
      3. John already established we are born into God’s family as one of His children not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (1:13) - not by pedigree, proximity, or credentials.
      4. So, Who’s your Father?
    17. To take a Paternity Test this morning. Simply submit yourself to a DNA testing.
      1. Die to self; Nip sin in the bud; Accept Christ as Lord & Savior.
      2. Your 2 choices: cast stones or cast yourself at the feet of Jesus!
