Contextual Overview

1All Israel was registered in the genealogies that are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. But Judah was exiled to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness. 1 So all Yisra'el were reckoned by genealogies; and, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Yisra'el: and Yehudah was carried away captive to Bavel for their disobedience. 1 So all Israel were reckoned by genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their transgression. 1 So all Israel was recorded in genealogies, and these are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. And Judah was taken into exile in Babylon because of their breach of faith. 1 The names of all the people of Israel were listed in their family histories, and those family histories were put in the book of the kings of Israel. The people of Judah were captured and forced to go to Babylon, because they were not faithful to God. 1 Genealogical records were kept for all Israel; they are recorded in the Scroll of the Kings of Israel. The people of Judah were carried away to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness. 1So all Israel was enrolled by genealogies; and they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. Gill's Notes on the Bible

And their brethren, according to their generations, nine hundred amd fifty and six,.... Which was the number of the Benjaminites there resident put together, and which greatly exceeded that of Judah, 1 Chronicles 9:6

all these men were chief of the fathers, in the house of their fathers; principal men in the families of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, even all the seven before mentioned.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The discrepancy between the numbers here and in Nehemiah Nehemiah 11:8 may arise from corruption. So in 1 Chronicles 9:13, 1 Chronicles 9:22.
