¹² They also that sought after my lyfe layde snares [for me]: and they that went about to do me euyll, talked of wickednesse, and imagined deceipt all the day long. ¹³ As for me, as one deafe I woulde not heare: and [I was] as one that is dumbe [who] coulde not open his mouth. ¹⁴ I became euen as a man that heareth not: and who hath no replies in his mouth. ¹⁵ For on thee O God I haue wayted: thou shalt aunswere for me O Lorde my God. ¹⁶ For I sayde [heare me] lest that they shoulde triumph on me: who auaunce [them selues] greatly agaynst me when my foote doth slyp. ¹⁷ Because I am disposed to a haltyng: and my sorowe is euer in my syght. ¹⁸ Because I confesse my wickednesse: and am sory for my sinne. ¹⁹ But myne enemies lyuyng [without payne] are mightie: & they that hate me wrongfully are increased in number. ²⁰ They also that rewarde euyl for good are agaynst me: because I folowe the thyng that is good. ²¹ Forsake me not O God: O my Lorde be not thou farre fro me.

Thus I was as a man that heareth not,.... Any thing that is said unto him; he took no more notice of it than if he had never heard it; but bore all the railings and calumnies of men with calmness and patience;

and in whose mouth [are] no reproofs; as if he had nothing to say for himself, in vindication of his character, and to the refutation of his enemies; as if he had no arguments to make use of, for the conviction and reproof of his adversaries.

Thus I was as a man that heareth not - The sentiment in the former verse is repeated here to show the greatness of his patience and forbearance, or to fix the attention on the fact that one who was so calumniated and wronged could bear it patiently.

And in whose mouth are no reproofs - As a man who never reproved another; who, whatever might be the wrong which he endured, never replied to it; as he would be who was incapable of reproof, or who had no faculty for reproving. The whole of this is designed to show his entire patience under the wrongs which he suffered.

Verse Psalms 38:14. No reproofs. — תוכחות tochachoth, arguments or vindications; a forensic term. I was as a man accused in open court, and I could make no defence.
