Contextual Overview

13 This wysdome haue I seene also vnder the sunne, and me thought it a great thing: 14 There was a litle citie and a few men within it: so there came a great kyng and besieged it, and made great bulwarkes against it. 15 And in the citie there was founde a poore man, but he was wyse, whiche with his wysdome deliuered the citie, yet was there no body that had any respect to such a simple man. 16 Then sayd I, wysdome is better then strength: Neuerthelesse, a simple mans wysdome is despised, and his wordes are not hearde. 17 A wyse mans counsayle that is folowed in scilence, is farre aboue the crying of a captaine among fooles. 18 For wysdome is better then harnesse: but one sinner alone destroyeth muche goodnesse.

As the likenesse of a bowe that is in a cloude in a raynie day, so was the appearaunce of the brightnesse rounde about: this was the appearaunce of the similitude of the glory of God, & when I sawe it, I fell vpon my face and hearkened vnto the voyce of one that spake.

And he that sate, was to loke vppon like vnto a Iasper stone and a Sardine stone: and there was a raynebowe about the throne, in sight like to an Emeralde.
Revelation 10:1
And I sawe another myghtie Angel come downe fro heaue, clothed with a cloude, and ye raynebowe vpon his head, and his face as it were the sunne, and his feete as it were pillers of fyre.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

This wisdom have I seen also under the sun,.... Or, "this also I have seen under the sun, even wisdom" h: besides those things he had, just now observed, he took notice that there was such a thing as wisdom among men; though success did not always attend the wise, the understanding, and skilful; and though there was so much ignorance in men, of their own time, and were so easily and suddenly ensnared in an evil time;

and it [seemed] great unto me; Solomon had a high value for wisdom, and he still retained the same sentiments of it he had before, in Ecclesiastes 2:13, of which he gives the following instance.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Or, Also this have I seen - wisdom under the sun, and great it seemed to me.

From this verse to the end of Ecclesiastes 10:0, the writer inculcates, in a series of proverbs, wisdom in contrast to folly, as the best remedy in the present life to the evil of vanity.
