²⁶ And the Angell of the Lorde spake vnto Philip, saying: Aryse, and go towarde the South, vnto the waye that goeth downe from Hierusalem vnto Gaza, which is desert. ²⁷ And he arose, & went on: and behold a man of Ethiopia, an Eunuch, & of great auctoritie with Candace, Queene of the Ethiopias, & had the rule of all her treasure, came to Hierusale for to worship. ²⁸ And as he returned home agayne, sittyng in his charet, he read Esaias the prophete. ²⁹ Then the spirite said vnto Philip: Go neare, & ioyne thy selfe to yonder charet. ³⁰ And Philip ran thither to him, & heard hym reade the prophete Esaias, & saide: vnderstandest thou what thou readest? ³¹ And he said: how can I, except I had a guyde? And he desired Philip that he woulde come vp, and sit with hym. ³² The tenour of the scripture which he read, was this: He was ledde as a sheepe to the slaughter, & lyke a lambe dumbe before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth. ³³ In his humilitie, his iudgement is exalted: But who shall declare his generation? For his lyfe is taken from the earth. ³⁴ And the Eunuche aunswered Philip, and sayde: I pray thee of whom speaketh the prophete this? Of hym selfe, or of some other man? ³⁵ Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached vnto hym Iesus.

Then the Spirit said unto Philip,.... Not the angel, a ministering Spirit, as in Acts 8:26 but the Holy Spirit, as the Syriac and Ethiopic versions read, the same with the Spirit of the Lord, Acts 8:39 who spoke unto him, either by an articulative voice, such as was the Bath Kol among the Jews; or inwardly, by a secret impulse upon him, he directed him, saying:

go near, and join thyself to this chariot; he bid him make up to the chariot, he saw driving on the road at such a distance, and follow it, and attend it closely; and not leave it, till an opportunity of conversing with the person in it offered.

The Spirit - See the notes on Acts 8:26. The Holy Spirit is evidently intended here. The thought in Philip’s mind is here traced to his suggestion. All good thoughts and designs have the same origin.

Join thyself - Join him in his chariot. Go and sit with him.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 29. Then the Spirit said unto Philip — This holy man having obeyed the first direction he received from God, and gone southward without knowing the reason why, it was requisite that he should now be informed of the object of his mission: the Spirit said unto him, go near, and join thyself, c. The angel who had given him the first direction had departed and the influence of the Holy Spirit now completed the information. It is likely that what the Spirit did in this case was by a strong impression on his mind, which left him no doubt of its being from God.
