¹² But when Gallio became Proconsul of Greece, the Jews with one accord made a dead set at Paul, and brought him before the court. ¹³ "This man," they said, "is inducing people to offer unlawful worship to God." ¹⁴ But, when Paul was about to begin his defence, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it had been some wrongful act or piece of cunning knavery I might reasonably have listened to you Jews. ¹⁵ But since these are questions about words and names and your Law, you yourselves must see to them. I refuse to be a judge in such matters." ¹⁶ So he ordered them out of court. ¹⁷ Then the people all set upon Sosthenes, the Warden of the synagogue, and beat him severely in front of the court. Gallio did not concern himself in the least about this.

And he drave them from the judgment seat. He would not hear, and try the cause; but dismissed them with threatening them, if ever they brought an affair of that kind to him any more.

And he drave them ... - He refused to hear and decide the controversy. The word used here does not denote that there was any violence used by Gallio, but merely that he dismissed them in an authoritative manner.

Verse Acts 18:16. And he drave them from the judgment seat. — He saw that their accusation was both frivolous and vexatious, and he ordered them to depart, and the assembly to disperse. The word απηλασεν, which we translate he drave, does not signify here any act of violence on the part of Gallio or the Roman officers, but simply an authoritative dismission.
