Contextual Overview

1 And right away in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin, held a consultation, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him up to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? And answering he says to him, You say. 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 And Pilate again asked him, saying, Do you answer nothing? look how many things they accuse you of. 5 But Jesus no more answered anything; insomuch that Pilate marveled. 6 Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whom they asked of him. 7 And there was one called Barabbas, [lying] bound with those that had made insurrection, men who in the insurrection had committed murder. 8 And the multitude went up and began to ask him [to do] as he usually did for them. 9 And Pilate answered them, saying, Do you want that I release to you the King of the Jews? 10 For he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the chief priests accused him of many things,.... As that he was a magician, and a blasphemer, and gave out that he was the Son of God; and that he made himself a king, and even forbad the people to give tribute to Caesar, and moved discord, sedition, and rebellion throughout the land;

but he answered nothing. This clause is wanting in the Vulgate Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Persic versions; but is in the Greek text of the Complutensian edition, and in the Ethiopic version, and agrees with Matthew 27:12,

Matthew 27:12- :.
