¹Then Jesus left and rode off to the region along Jordan Creek. Once again, the crowds of people found him and he taught them about riding for God's outfit. ²Some of the bigwig preachers showed their ugly hides and tried to throw a heel trap at him and get him to say something wrong. They asked him, "Is it right for a cowboy to divorce his wife?" ³Jesus turned it back on 'em and said, "What did Moses have to say about it?" ⁴They puffed out their chests as they began to show off their scripture knowledge. "Moses said it was fine. All a cowboy has to do is give her a paper that says they are divorced." ⁵But Jesus was already shaking his head. "Yeah, he said that, but only because you are weak and don't understand nothin'. ⁶From the beginning, God made cowboys and cowgirls. ⁷It's because of this that a cowboy will leave his own parents and unite with a cowgirl and the ⁸two will become one. In God's eyes, they are one person. ⁹And what God has joined together, what right has anyone else to come and try to sort off one?" ¹⁰Later on in the house, the cowboys asked Jesus about what he'd said.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And he answered and said unto them,.... Very prudently and wisely,

what did Moses command you? according to Matthew, he put another question to them; see Matthew 19:4; no doubt but both were put, and this after they had urged the authority and law of Moses: and therefore be very pertinently asks them, what Moses had said about divorces, what law he had left; and puts them upon producing and repeating it, that the sense of it might be examined, and it be considered, upon what account it was given.

And if a woman shall put away her husband - It would seem, from this, that a woman, among the Jews, had the power of separating herself from her husband, yet this right is not given her by the law of Moses. There is not, however, any positive evidence that females often claimed or exercised this right. Cases had occurred, indeed, in which it had been done. The wife of Herod had rejected her former husband and married Herod. And though instances of this kind “might” have been attempted to be defended by the example of Pagans, yet our Saviour was desirous of showing them that it did not free them from the charge of adultery. The apostles were going forth to teach Pagan nations, and it was proper for Christ to teach them how to act in such cases, and to show them that they were cases of real adultery.
