Contextual Overview
36One of the religious know-it-alls invited Jesus to have supper at his house and he accepted.
37There was a lady from town who wasn't really known for being a "lady." She heard Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house and so she showed up with an expensive bottle of perfume.
38She knelt down by his feet and sobbed at the plight of her life. Her tears fell on Jesus's boots and she wiped his boots clean with her hair. She even kissed them as she poured the perfume on them.
39The religious know-it-all who'd invited Jesus said under his breath, "If this guy was God's Top Hand, there is no way he'd let that kind of woman touch him with her hair, much less her lips."
40Jesus heard him and said, "Listen to me, Simon.""I'm listenin'," he answered.
41"There was a top hand who was hired by two different ranchers. One ranch owed the cowboy five hundred dollars and the other ranch owed the cowboy fifty dollars.
42Cattle prices were way down and neither rancher could afford to pay the cowboy, so he told them both not to worry about it and take care of their families. Tell me, which one would have the most respect for the cowboy?"
43Simon said, "I reckon' it would be the rancher who owed him the five hundred dollars."Jesus said, "You know he would."
44Then Jesus turned to the woman, but spoke to Simon. "You see this girl? I came here as your guest, but you didn't offer me a rag to wipe the trail dust from my boots, but she cleaned them with her tears and her hair.
45You didn't even welcome me with a brotherly hug, yet she has kissed my boots from the time I got here.

And Jesus answering said unto him,.... Christ being God omniscient, knew not only the character and conversation of this woman, which were publicly known by all, that knew any thing of her, but also the secret thoughts and reasonings of the Pharisee, and makes answer to them; which shows, that he was a prophet, in the sense of this man; yea, more than a prophet:
Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee; this could not be Simon Peter, Christ spoke to, as some have suggested; for the answer is made unto the Pharisee, and he is the person addressed by the name of Simon; even he, into whose house Christ entered, and now was, as appears from Luke 7:44.
And he saith, Master; or teacher, or doctor; or as the Syriac version, "Rabbi"; which was the common salutation of doctors:
say on. This was a way of speaking in use with the Jews, giving leave to proceed in a discourse; and as Christ was now a guest in this man's house, he asks leave of him, and he grants him it: so we read of R. Simeon ben Gamaliel z that he said to R. Ishmael ben Elishah,
