Hebrews 8

Jesus Is Our New Trail Boss

1 Now we are getting to the meat of the matter. We have a trail boss who has a spot reserved for him in heaven at the right hand of the Almighty God. 2 From his spot, he leads the worship in the true house of God, not one built by human hands, but built by God himself.

3 Every trail boss was supposed to offer gifts and sacrifices to God and our new trail boss does too. 4 If Jesus was on earth, he wouldn't even be a trail boss. There are plenty who can give gifts and make sacrifices according the old code. 5 They serve in a house of God that is just a fuzzy copy of the real one in heaven. This is why Moses was given instructions to build God's worship tent in a very specific way.

6 So you see how Jesus, our trail boss, has a ministry that far surpasses the old way. He vouches for us based on a better agreement and a better promise.

7 I mean, if that first agreement between God and his people was perfect, then there wouldn't be a need for another agreement. 8 But God knew his people wouldn't be able to follow the old trail, and really, that was the whole point. That's why he said, "There's a day coming when I'll shake hands with the people of Israel and Judah and show them a new trail. 9 This new agreement and new trail won't be like the old one I made with their forefathers who I led out of Egypt. They didn't stay on the trail like I told them so I let them wander away from me. 10 But this is the new agreement I'm going to make with Israel and Judah. I'll write my code on their hearts and brand it into their brains. I'm going to be their God and they're going to be my cowboys. 11 They won't need to teach their neighbors or their kin. They won't have to say, 'Know God.' There'll never be another excuse for not knowing me. Everyone from top hands to wannabes will know me already. 12 And I'm going to erase their tally book of sins and forgive all their wickedness."

13 When God says he made a new agreement, it means the old one has been replaced, not added to. It has served its purpose and will soon disappear like an old trail nobody walks anymore.
