Contextual Overview

1 Then came the word of Yahweh. unto me saying, 2 Son of man, Set thy face against the mountains of Israel, - and prophesy unto them; 3 and say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear ye the word of My Lord Yahweh, - Thus saith My Lord, Yahweh- To the mountains and to the hills to the hollows and to the valleys,- Behold me! I, am bringing upon you a sword, And I will destroy your high places; 4 And your altars shall be laid waste, And your sun-pillars shall be broken in pieces, - And I will cause your slain to fall before your manufactured gods; 5 And I will lay the carcases of the sons of Israel before their manufactured gods, - And will scatter your bones round about your altars. 6 In all your dwelling-places, the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places, shall be made desolate, To the end your altar may be laid waste and become desolate. And your manufactured gods be broken in pieces and cease, And your sun-pillars be cut down, And your handiworks be abolished. 7 And the slain shall fall in your midst, So shall ye nod that I a Yahweh.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the slain shall fall in the midst of you,.... The word for slain is in the singular number, which perhaps is put for the plural; and so the Septuagint renders it; unless it should design some principal person that should be slain; but, as King Zedekiah was not slain when the city was taken, only his sons and his princes, it seems best to understand it of the multitude that were slain in the midst of the land, not only in Jerusalem, but in all the cities of Judea; and denotes how general and public the destruction would be:

and ye shall know that I [am] the Lord; the only true God, and Governor of the world; who only is to be worshipped, feared, and served, and not idols.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The force of the words is, “When the slain shall fall in the midst of you, then at last ye shall know that I am the Lord.” So in Ezekiel 6:10 where the knowledge implies a recognition of the merciful intent of Yahweh’s dispensations, and therefore, a hope of restoration.
