THE MESSAGE
Then the Word of God came to me: "Son of man, now turn and face the mountains of Israel and preach against them: ‘O Mountains of Israel, listen to the Message of God , the Master. God , the Master, speaks to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and the valleys: I'm about to destroy your sacred god and goddess shrines. I'll level your altars, bust up your sun-god pillars, and kill your people as they bow down to your no-god idols. I'll stack the dead bodies of Israelites in front of your idols and then scatter your bones around your shrines. Every place where you've lived, the towns will be torn down and the pagan shrines demolished—altars busted up, idols smashed, all your custom-made sun-god pillars in ruins. Corpses everywhere you look! Then you'll know that I am God .

Contextual Overview

1 Then came the word of Yahweh. unto me saying, 2 Son of man, Set thy face against the mountains of Israel, - and prophesy unto them; 3 and say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear ye the word of My Lord Yahweh, - Thus saith My Lord, Yahweh- To the mountains and to the hills to the hollows and to the valleys,- Behold me! I, am bringing upon you a sword, And I will destroy your high places; 4 And your altars shall be laid waste, And your sun-pillars shall be broken in pieces, - And I will cause your slain to fall before your manufactured gods; 5 And I will lay the carcases of the sons of Israel before their manufactured gods, - And will scatter your bones round about your altars. 6 In all your dwelling-places, the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places, shall be made desolate, To the end your altar may be laid waste and become desolate. And your manufactured gods be broken in pieces and cease, And your sun-pillars be cut down, And your handiworks be abolished. 7 And the slain shall fall in your midst, So shall ye nod that I a Yahweh.

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

And the word: This is a new prophecy, and was probably given after the 430 days of his lying on his left and right side were accomplished. By Israel here Judea is simply meant; not the ten tribes, who had long before been carried captive. Ezekiel 6:1

Reciprocal: Jeremiah 29:16 - General

Cross-References

Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them, and God said to them Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, - and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the bird of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth on the land.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying. That is, the word of prophecy from the Lord, as the Targum: this, according to Junius, was delivered out by the prophet on a sabbath day, the twenty first of the fifth month, and in the sixth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity; and so was more than a year after the vision at Chebar, Ezekiel 1:1.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The former prophecies concerned the city of Jerusalem and the inhabitants of Judaea. The present is addressed to the whole land and people of Israel, which is to be included in a like judgment, The ground of the judgment is “idolatry,” and the whole rests on Deuteronomy 12:0. The prophecy is against the “mountains” of Israel, because the mountains and valleys were the seats of idol-worship. It is also the proclamation of the final judgment of Israel. It is the picture of the future judgment of the world.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER VI

In this chapter, which forms a distinct section, the prophet

denounces the judgments of God against the Jews for their

idolatry, 1-7;

but tells them that a remnant shall be saved, and brought to a

sense of their sins by their severe afflictions, 8-14.
