But the Lord God called to the man. He said to him, "Where are you?"
The Lord said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground.
Now Abram's wife Sarai had not given birth to any children. She had a woman servant from Egypt whose name was Hagar.
So Sarai said to Abram, "Now see, the Lord has kept me from having children. Go in to the woman who serves me. It may be that I will get children through her." Abram listened to what Sarai said.
He went in to Hagar, and she was going to have a child. And when she saw that she was going to have a child, she began to hate Sarai.
Then Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done to me be upon you. I gave the woman who served me into your arms. But when she saw that she was going to have a child, she began to hate me. May the Lord judge who is guilty or not between you and me."
He said, "Hagar, you who serve Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" And she said, "I am running away from Sarai, the one I serve."
Now I beg you, let my lord the king listen to the words of his servant. If the Lord has made you come against me, let Him receive a gift. But if men have done this, may bad come to them before the Lord. For they have driven me out this day, that I should have no share of what the Lord has given. They say, ‘Go, worship other gods.'
If the ruler becomes angry with you, do not back away. If you are quiet, much wrong-doing may be put aside.
Gill's Notes on the Bible
Greet Amplias my beloved in the Lord. This was a Roman name; the Vulgate Latin reads "Ampliatus", and so do the Alexandrian copy, and the Ethiopic version: some call him "Amphias", and "Amphiatus", and say, but whether on good authority I will not affirm, that this man was bishop of Odyssus; but be he who he will, the apostle had a singular affection for him; and that not upon any external account, as natural relation, riches, honour, learning, c. but for the Lord's sake, and as he was in Christ, a member of him, and so in a spiritual relation to the apostle a "brother" of his, as the Ethiopic version here calls him; and because he was honoured with the gifts and graces of the Spirit, and for his usefulness in the Gospel of Christ Jesus.
