Demolish, and Then Start Over The Message of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah of the family of priests who lived in Anathoth in the country of Benjamin. God 's Message began to come to him during the thirteenth year that Josiah son of Amos reigned over Judah. It continued to come to him during the time Jehoiakim son of Josiah reigned over Judah. And it continued to come to him clear down to the fifth month of the eleventh year of the reign of Zedekiah son of Josiah over Judah, the year that Jerusalem was taken into exile. This is what God said: "Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations— that's what I had in mind for you." But I said, "Hold it, Master God ! Look at me. I don't know anything. I'm only a boy!" God told me, "Don't say, ‘I'm only a boy.' I'll tell you where to go and you'll go there. I'll tell you what to say and you'll say it. Don't be afraid of a soul. I'll be right there, looking after you." God 's Decree. God reached out, touched my mouth, and said, "Look! I've just put my words in your mouth—hand-delivered! See what I've done? I've given you a job to do among nations and governments—a red-letter day! Your job is to pull up and tear down, take apart and demolish, And then start over, building and planting." God 's Message came to me: "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I said, "A walking stick—that's all." And God said, "Good eyes! I'm sticking with you. I'll make every word I give you come true." God 's Message came again: "So what do you see now?" I said, "I see a boiling pot, tipped down toward us." Then God told me, "Disaster will pour out of the north on everyone living in this land. Watch for this: I'm calling all the kings out of the north." God 's Decree. "They'll come and set up headquarters facing Jerusalem's gates, Facing all the city walls, facing all the villages of Judah. I'll pronounce my judgment on the people of Judah for walking out on me—what a terrible thing to do!— And courting other gods with their offerings, worshiping as gods sticks they'd carved, stones they'd painted.
"I will pronounce My judgments on them concerning all their wickedness, whereby they have forsaken Me and have offered sacrifices to other gods, and worshiped the works of their own hands.

Cross-References
So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. It was so.
God called the expanse "sky." There was evening, and there was morning, a second day.
God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear." It was so.
The land produced vegetation—plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. God saw that it was good.
God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them be signs to indicate seasons and days and years,
When you look up to the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars—the whole heavenly creation—you must not be seduced to worship and serve them, for the Lord your God has assigned them to all the people of the world.
if I looked at the sun when it was shining, and the moon advancing as a precious thing,
when the morning stars sang in chorus, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made, and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,
It emerges from the distant horizon, and goes from one end of the sky to the other; nothing can escape its heat.
Gill's Notes on the Bible
And I will utter my judgments against them,.... Not against the kingdoms of the north, but against the people of the Jews. The sense is, that God would enter into judgment with this people, and pass sentence upon them, and execute it:
touching all their wickedness; or on account of all their sins and transgressions hereafter mentioned:
who have forsaken me. The Targum is, "who have forsaken my worship"; for to forsake the public worship of God, attendance on his word and ordinances, or to forsake the assembling of themselves together for such a purpose, is to forsake the Lord himself, the fountain of living waters; and this is to forsake their own mercies:
and have burnt incense to other gods; to the idols of the Gentile, as the Targum explains it; to Baal, to the queen of heaven, and to others:
and worshipped the works of their own hands: idols of gold, silver, brass, and wood, which their own hands formed and carved, and which argued great stupidity and ignorance.
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
In accordance with the custom of law courts, the crimes of the guilty city are mentioned in the sentence. The charges brought against her are three: first, the desertion of the true God; next, the offering incense to false gods, and, lastly, the making obeisance to, or bowing down 2 Kings 5:18 before images of human workmanship.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse Jeremiah 1:16. I will utter my judgments — God denounced his judgments: the conquest of their cities, and the destruction of the realm, were the facts to which these judgments referred; and these facts prove that the threatening was fulfilled.
Worshipped the works of their own hands. — Idolatry was the source of all their wickedness, and was the cause of their desolations.
