THE MESSAGE
Next morning when the citizens of Ashdod got up, they were shocked to find Dagon toppled from his place, flat on his face before the Chest of God . They picked him up and put him back where he belonged. First thing the next morning they found him again, toppled and flat on his face before the Chest of God . Dagon's head and arms were broken off, strewn across the entrance. Only his torso was in one piece. (That's why even today, the priests of Dagon and visitors to the Dagon shrine in Ashdod avoid stepping on the threshold.)
New American Standard Bible (1995)
When the Ashdodites arose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and set him in his place again.

Contextual Overview

1 After the Philistines had captured the Ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 They carried it into Dagon's temple and put it next to Dagon. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next morning, they found that Dagon had fallen on his face on the ground before the Ark of the Lord . So they put Dagon back in his place. 4 The next morning when they rose, they again found Dagon fallen on the ground before the Ark of the Lord . His head and hands had broken off and were lying in the doorway. Only his body was still in one piece. 5 So, even today, Dagon's priests and others who enter his temple at Ashdod refuse to step on the doorsill.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, e.] Either the people, the inhabitants of the place, who came early to pay their devotions to their idol, before they went on their business or the priests of the idol, who came to sacrifice in the morning:

and, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord; as if he was subject to it, and giving adoration to it, and owning it was above him, and had superior power over him:

and they took Dagon, and set him in his place again; having no notion that it was owing to the ark of God, or to the God of Israel, that he was fallen, but that it was a matter of chance.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Samuel 5:3. They of Ashdod arose early on the morrow — Probably to perform some act of their superstition in the temple of their idol.

Dagon was fallen upon his face — This was one proof, which they little expected, of the superiority of the God of Israel.

Set him in his place again. — Supposing his fall might have been merely accidental.
