Contextual Overview

1A Pilgrim Song O God , remember David, remember all his troubles! And remember how he promised God , made a vow to the Strong God of Jacob, "I'm not going home, and I'm not going to bed, I'm not going to sleep, not even take time to rest, Until I find a home for God , a house for the Strong God of Jacob." 6Remember how we got the news in Ephrathah, learned all about it at Jaar Meadows? We shouted, "Let's go to the shrine dedication! Let's worship at God's own footstool!" 8Up, God , enjoy your new place of quiet repose, you and your mighty covenant ark; Get your priests all dressed up in justice; prompt your worshipers to sing this prayer: "Honor your servant David; don't disdain your anointed one."

Bible Verse Review

give sleep: Genesis 24:33, Ruth 3:18, Proverbs 6:4

Gill's Notes on the Bible

I will not give sleep to mine eyes, [or] slumber to mine eyelids. Not that he never would or did take any sleep till this thing was brought about he had so much at heart; but that he could not and would not suffer himself to sleep comfortably and quietly because of it. Aben Ezra interprets it of sleep at noon; the phrases express his great desire and solicitude to have this affair accomplished, and his eager and diligent pursuit of it; see Proverbs 6:4; of the eager desire of Christ to suffer and die for his people, that they might be brought near to God, and be his dwelling place, see Luke 12:50.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

I will not give sleep to mine eyes ... - There is no difference here between the words sleep and slumber. The meaning is, that the house of the Lord should be his first care.
