The Lord’s anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say: “Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.”
Again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Yisra'el, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Yisra'el and Yehudah.
And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

The Lord was angry with Israel again, and he caused David to turn against the Israelites. He said, "Go, count the people of Israel and Judah."
The Lord 's anger again raged against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, "Go count Israel and Judah."
Now again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He incited David against them to say, "Go, count [the people of] Israel and Judah."

And the wrath of the Lord was againe kindled against Israel, and he moued Dauid against them, in that he saide, Goe, number Israel and Iudah.
And again the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and it incited David against them to say, "Go, number Israel and Judah."
The Lord was angry at Israel again, and he made David think it would be a good idea to count the people in Israel and Judah.
The anger of Adonai blazed up against Isra'el, so he moved David to act against them by saying, "Go, take a census of Isra'el and Y'hudah."
And again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.
The Lord was angry with Israel again. He caused David to turn against the Israelites. He told David, "Go count the people of Israel and Judah."
AND again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them and said to him, Go, number Israel and Judah.
On another occasion the Lord was angry with Israel, and he made David bring trouble on them. The Lord said to him, "Go and count the people of Israel and Judah."
Again Yahweh was angry with Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, "Go count Israel and Judah."
And again the anger of Jehovah glowed against Israel, and moved David against them, to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
And the LORDE was wrothfully displeased of ye new agaynst Israel, and moued Dauid amonge them, because he saide: Go, nombre Israel and Iuda.
And again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.
Again the wrath of the Lord was burning against Israel, and moving David against them, he said, Go, take the number of Israel and Judah.
And agayne the Lorde was wroth against Israel, and he moued Dauid agaynst them, in that he sayde: Go number Israel & Iuda.

The synne of the puple for which it was punyschid, is not expressid in the text, but in the book of Ebreu questiouns it is seid, that this was herfor, for the puple ayen stood not Dauyth as it ouyte, in the dede of Vrie, but for this dede was priuy til it was al doon; the puple myyte not withstonde Dauyth in the synne to be lettid, and aftir that this synne cam in to the knowing of the puple, the puple ouyte not to punysche it, for the peyne was determynd thanne of God, as it is opin in xii. co. bi the wordis of Nathan, therfor it is seid betere, that the synne of the puple, was the rebelte therof ayenus Dauyth in suynge Siba, sone of Bothry, that was the worste man and ful of dissencioun, and Siba aloone was punyschid for this rebelte. ], and he stiride in hem Dauid, seiynge to Joab, Go thou, and noumbre thou Israel and Juda.
And the anger of Jehovah addeth to burn against Israel, and [an adversary] moveth David about them, saying, `Go, number Israel and Judah.'

he: This verse, when read without reference to any other part of the word of God, is very difficult to understand, and has been used by those who desire to undermine the justice of God, to shew that he sought occasion to punish - that he incited David to sin; and when he had so incited him, gave to him the dreadful alternative of choosing one of three scourges by which his people were to be cut off. On the face of the passage these thoughts naturally arise, because "the Lord" is the antecedent to the pronoun "he," - He moved David. But to those who "search the Scriptures," this exceedingly difficult passage receives a wonderful elucidation. By referring to 1 Chronicles 21:1, the reader will there find that Satan was the mover, and that the Lord most righteously punished David for the display of pride he had manifested. Oh! that Christians, who sometimes have their minds harassed with doubts, would remember the promise, that what they know not now they shall know hereafter; and if no other instance of elucidation than this passage occurred to them to remove their doubts, let this be a means of stirring them up to dig deeper than ever into the inexhaustible mines of the Inspired Word. Abraham and Sarah were old by this time, very old. Sarah was far past the age for having babies. Sarah laughed within herself, "An old woman like me? Get pregnant? With this old man of a husband?"
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born. Sarah said, God has blessed me with laughter and all who get the news will laugh with me!
Abraham was now an old man. God had blessed Abraham in every way.
King David grew old. The years had caught up with him. Even though they piled blankets on him, he couldn't keep warm. So his servants said to him, "We're going to get a young virgin for our master the king to be at his side and look after him; she'll get in bed with you and arouse our master the king." So they searched the country of Israel for the most ravishing girl they could find; they found Abishag the Shunammite and brought her to the king. The girl was stunningly beautiful; she stayed at his side and looked after the king, but the king did not have sex with her.
God 's blessing makes life rich; nothing we do can improve on God.
So those now who live by faith are blessed along with Abraham, who lived by faith—this is no new doctrine! And that means that anyone who tries to live by his own effort, independent of God, is doomed to failure. Scripture backs this up: "Utterly cursed is every person who fails to carry out every detail written in the Book of the law."
How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He's the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.

And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel,.... It had been kindled, and appeared before in sending a three years' famine among them for Saul's ill usage of the Gibeonites, 2 Samuel 21:1; and now it broke forth again, either for some secret sins committed, as Kimchi suggests, or for the rebellion of Absalom, and the insurrection of Sheba, in which multitudes of them joined; so Abarbinel; no doubt there was cause for it, though it is not expressed:
and he moved David against them; not the Lord, but Satan, as may be supplied from 1 Chronicles 21:1; or "it moved him"; the anger of the Lord, as the last mentioned writer interprets it; or the heart of David, as Ben Gersom; that is, the evil imagination of his heart, as Kimchi; the Lord left him to the corruption of his nature, sometimes called Satan, 2 Corinthians 12:7; which wrought powerfully in him, and stirred him up to take a step contrary to the interest of Israel, and what was prejudicial to them, as the event showed: it moved him to say; to Joab and his captains:
go, number Israel and Judah: not all the individuals, but such as were fit for war, able to bear arms, see 2 Samuel 24:9.

And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel - This sentence is the heading of the whole chapter, which goes on to describe the sin which kindled this anger, namely, the numbering of the people 1 Chronicles 21:7-8; 1 Chronicles 27:24. There is no note of time, except that the word âagainâ shows that these events happened âafterâ those of 2 Samuel 21:0. (Compare also 2Sa 24:25; 2 Samuel 21:14.)
And he moved David - In 1 Chronicles 21:1 the statement is, âand an adversaryâ (not âSatan,â as the King James Version, since there is no article prefixed, as in Job 1:6; Job 2:1, etc.) âstood up against Israel and moved David,â just as 1Ki 11:14, 1 Kings 11:23, 1 Kings 11:25 first Hadad, and then Rezon, is said to have been âan adversaryâ (Satan) to Solomon and to Israel. Hence, our text should be rendered, âFor one moved David against them.â We are not told whose advice it was, but some one, who proved himself an enemy to the best interests of David and Israel, urged the king to number the people.

CHAPTER XXIV
David is tempted by Satan to number Israel and Judah, 1.
Joab remonstrates against it, but the king determines that it
shall be done; and Joab and the captains accomplish the work,
and bring the sum total to the king: viz.: eight hundred
thousand warriors in Israel, and five hundred thousand in
Judah, 2-9.
David is convinced that he has done wrong; and the prophet Gad
is sent to him, to give him his choice of three judgments,
one of which God is determined to inflict upon the nation,
10-13.
David humbles himself before God; and a pestilence is sent,
which destroys seventy thousand men, 14, 15.
The angel of the Lord being about to destroy Jerusalem, David
makes intercession, and the plague is stayed, 16, 17.
Gad directs him to build an altar to the Lord on the
threshing-floor of Araunah, where the plague was stayed, 18.
He purchases this place for the purpose, and offers
burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. 19-25.
NOTES ON CHAP. XXIV
Verse 2 Samuel 24:1. He moved David against them — God could not be angry with David for numbering the people if he moved him to do it; but in the parallel place (1 Chronicles 21:1) it is expressly said, Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. David, in all probability, slackening in his piety and confidence toward God, and meditating some extension of his dominions without the Divine counsel or command, was naturally curious to know whether the number of fighting men in his empire was sufficient for the work which he had projected. See more on 2 Samuel 24:10. He therefore orders Joab and the captains to take an exact account of all the effective men in Israel and Judah. God is justly displeased with this conduct, and determines that the props of his vain ambition shall be taken away, either by famine, war, or pestilence.
