Contextual Overview
Bible Verse Review
from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge
Hormah: Joshua 19:4, Judges 1:17
Chorashan: Probably the same as Ashan in Simeon, Joshua 15:42, Joshua 19:7, which Eusebius says was sixteen miles west from Jerusalem.
Reciprocal: Numbers 21:3 - the name
Cross-References
The land you are entering to take up ownership isn't like Egypt, the land you left, where you had to plant your own seed and water it yourselves as in a vegetable garden. But the land you are about to cross the river and take for your own is a land of mountains and valleys; it drinks water that rains from the sky. It's a land that God , your God, personally tends—he's the gardener—he alone keeps his eye on it all year long.
Everything is in readiness now for this, my third visit to you. But don't worry about it; you won't have to put yourselves out. I'll be no more of a bother to you this time than on the other visits. I have no interest in what you have—only in you. Children shouldn't have to look out for their parents; parents look out for the children. I'd be most happy to empty my pockets, even mortgage my life, for your good. So how does it happen that the more I love you, the less I'm loved?
Gill's Notes on the Bible
And to [them] which [were] in Hormah,.... This was a city also in the tribe of Judah; of which see Joshua 15:30;
and to [them] which [were] in Chorashan; or the lake of Ashan, which was in the same tribe, see Joshua 15:42;
and to [them] which [were] in Athach; nowhere else mentioned; the Greek version has Nombe instead of it, which some take to be the same with Nob; but that was in the tribe of Benjamin.
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
Chor-ashan - Perhaps the same as Ashan Joshua 15:42, in the Shephelah of Judah, inhabited by Simeonites, and one of the priestsâ cities 1 Chronicles 4:32; 1 Chronicles 6:59.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse 1 Samuel 30:30. Hormah — The general name of those cities which belonged to Arad, king of Canaan; and were devoted to destruction by the Hebrews, and thence called Hormah. See Numbers 21:1-3.
In Chor-ashan — Probably the same as Ashan in the tribe of Judah: see Joshua 15:42. It was afterwards ceded to Simeon, Joshua 19:7.
To them which were in Athach — Probably the same as Ether, Joshua 19:7.
