Contextual Overview

1 In the mean time, the apostles, and the brethren, who were in Judea, heard that the Gentiles had likewise receiv'd the word of God. 2 and when Peter was return'd to Jerusalem, the Jewish converts objected to his conduct, 3 and ask'd him, why did you go to eat with the uncircumcised? 4 but Peter represented the whole affair to them, 5 saying, as I was at prayers in Joppa, I saw something like a great sheet, tied at the four corners, which descended from heaven, and came just to me. 6 as I was considering it very attentively, I saw several quadrupeds, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. 7 then I heard a voice, which said, rise, Peter; kill and eat. 8 but I said, Lord, by no means: for I never did eat any thing impure, and defiled. 9 but the voice from heaven address'd it self to me again, and said, don't call that impure, which God has purified. 10 this was done three times, and then the whole scene was mounted to heaven.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting,....

:-,

moreover, these six brethren accompanied me; it seems by this, that the six brethren that went along with Peter from Joppa to Caesarea, came also with him from thence to Jerusalem, and were now present, whom he points to; so that it looks as if Peter was aware, that he should be called to an account for his conduct, when he should come to Jerusalem; and therefore brought these six brethren with him, to be witnesses for him, of what they had seen and heard, which was a very wise and prudential step:

and we entered into the man's house; the house of Cornelius, for entering into whose house they were contending with him, and where he entered not alone, but the six brethren with him; the Ethiopic version wrongly reads "three".

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Clarke's Notes on the Bible
