Contextual Overview

12 For as the body is one, and hath yet many membres, neuertheles all the membres of the body though they be many, are yet but one body: euen so Christ also. 13 For we are all baptysed in one sprete to be one body, whether we be Iewes or Gentyles, whether we be bonde or fre, and haue all dronke of one sprete. 14 For the body also is not one membre, but many. 15 Yf the fote saye: I am not ye hande, therfore am I not a membre of the body,is he therfore not a membre of ye body? 16 And yf the eare saye: I am not the eye, therfore am I not a membre of the body, is he therfore not a membre of the body? 17 Yf all the body were an eye, where were then the hearinge? Yf all were hearinge, where then the smellinge? 18 But now hath God set the membres, euery one seuerally in the body, as it hath pleased him. 19 Neuertheles yf all the mebres were one membre, where were then the body? 20 But now are the membres many, yet is the body but one. 21 The eye can not saye vnto the hande: I haue no nede of the: or agayne the heade vnto the fete, I haue no nede of you:

Gill's Notes on the Bible

But now are they many members,.... Of different make and shape, in different parts and places, and of different use and service:

yet but one body; all are united together, and make up one complete body, and which without each of them would not be perfect: so there are many members in the body of Christ, the church; some are teachers, others are hearers; some give, and others receive; but all make up but one church, of which Christ is the head; nor can anyone of them be spared; was anyone wanting, even the meanest, there would be a deficiency, and the church would not be the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
