Contextual Overview

1And YHWH speaks to Moses, saying, 2"Speak to the sons of Israel, and you have said to them: When a man makes a special vow in your valuation of persons to YHWH, 3then your valuation has been of the male from a son of twenty years even to a son of sixty years, and your valuation has been fifty shekels of silver by the shekel of the holy place. 4And if it [is] a female, then your valuation has been thirty shekels; 5and if from a son of five years even to a son of twenty years, then your valuation of the male has been twenty shekels, and for the female, ten shekels; 6and if from a son of a month even to a son of five years, then your valuation of the male has been five shekels of silver, and for the female your valuation [is] three shekels of silver;7and if from a son of sixty years and above, if a male, then your valuation has been fifteen shekels, and for a female, ten shekels. 8And if he is poorer than your valuation, then he has presented himself before the priest, and the priest has valued him; according to that which the hand of him who is vowing reaches, the priest values him. 9And if [it is] a beast of which they bring near [as] an offering to YHWH, all that [one] gives of it to YHWH is holy; 10he does not change it nor exchange it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good; and if he really exchanges beast for beast, then it has been [holy] and its exchange is holy.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And if [it be] from a month old even unto five years old,.... That is, if a man devotes his child to the Lord within such an age, and says, the estimation of this my son or my daughter be upon me, then he was to pay the value, as next directed; for one under a month old no estimation was to be made: the Jews say,

"one less than a mouth old may be vowed, but not estimated o:''

then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver; somewhat more than ten shillings:

and for the female thy estimation [shall be] three shekels of silver; about seven shillings, which is the least value put on any; and though the lives of male or female at this age are equally uncertain, and the service of either of little worth when near the full time fixed; yet the preference is given to the male, as being of the more perfect kind, and its life generally most desirable.

o Misn. Eracin, c. 1. sect. 1.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The relative values of the persons appear to be regulated according to an estimate of the probable value of their future work:

Ages Male Female
From a month to five years of age 5 shekels 3 shekels
From five years to twenty of age 20 shekels 10 shekels
From forty years to sixty of age 50 shekels 30 shekels
Sixty years of age and older: 15 shekels 10 shekels

As regards the shekel of the sanctuary, see Exodus 38:24 note.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Leviticus 27:6. A month old — The male child, five shekels, 15s., the female, three shekels, 9s. Being both in comparative infancy, they were nearly of an equal value. None were vowed under a month old: the first-born being always considered as the Lord's property, could not be vowed, see Leviticus 27:26.
